2009 Classic Tournament Overview
Firstly,
thanks to everyone who participated in this years Classic Tournament, the event was successful in every aspect except for
the PARTICIPATION, we had only 64 players. This seems
to be the ongoing problem in the last few years, people are just not signing up for this event, when we get 90+ players in
our one day Chief’s tournaments and regularly exceed 64 players in the other tournaments something is wrong. The “Classic” was known as our signature tournament of the
year and it cost our club the biggest outlay in money and preparation for this event each year.We have tried several different tournament formats, times of the year and even changed
the weekend event to two consecutive Saturdays in the past with not much stimulation in participation. Considering the economy the “Classic” entry fee of
$41.00 (more like a golf stimulas package) for this two day event that included food and prizes can not be beat. Our Board of Directors worked tirelessly to put this event together,
it is therefore extremely frustrating and does not make economic sense to put forth the money and time preparing this event for around 1/4 of our membership. Other than scrapping the event, if we are to give the “Classic” another chance
we need to make some drastic changes for next year.
Here are some of my suggestions for next
year:
1. We play this tournament on one
day (18 holes) on a Saturday TBD in June or July. (this elleviates people who can play one day but not the next or one weekend
but not the next, this also saves one day’s green fees and reduces the buy in). 2.
We run two or three formats, either three different 6 hole formats or a
different front and back nine format. 3. We
open the tournament to any male 18 years and older with a varifiable handicap. (this should increase the field and possibly
fill the course with 144 players, perfect for a shotgun start) 4. If the field gets to 100 players and more our possibility of getting bigger sponsorship increases
tremendously as the sponsors get more exposure. 5. A
separate “Classic” committee headed up by the tournament chairman comprised of selected Board members and volunteers
from the club start the preparation for the tournament as early as January.
My above
suggestions together with your input can turn this event around and make it the signature tournament we were once proud of.
Please forward your suggestions and / or comments
to me or any member of our current Board of directors. Also, if there is a specific reason you have not participated in this tournament in the past, let us know we want
to make this equitable for everyone. Please make a
point of attending the general membership meeting on September 26th to vote for election of our new Board of directors
and to resolve this issue.
Sincerely, Mark Cerff (President)
